IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is a New Delhi-based Central Open Learning University. It is located near MaidanGarhi. The university, named after former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was founded in 1985 with a budget of $20 million after the Indian Parliament enacted the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985. (IGNOU Act 1985). IGNOU, which is run by India’s central government, claims to be the world’s largest university, with approximately 4 million students enrolled.

IGNOU was formed to serve the Indian people by providing high-quality of education in remote and open education to persons from all walks of life. It also seeks to promote, organize, and establish standards for remote and open education in India, as well as to improve India’s human resources through education. Aside from teaching and research, the university’s academic activities are centered on extension and training. It also serves as a national resource center, promoting and maintaining remote education standards in India. IGNOU houses the secretariats of the SAARC Consortium on Open and Distance Learning (SACODiL) and the Global Mega Universities Network (GMUNET), both of which are supported by UNESCO.

IGNOU begin the decentralization process by dividing the university into FIVE zones: north, south, east, west, and north-east. The first regional headquarters would be built on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, to serve four southern states: Pondicherry, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. IGNOU has been tasked by the Ministry of HRD with drafting a Draft Policy on Open and Distance Learning and Online Courses. In order to launch courses, IGNOU collaborates with other organizations.
